Bettola

Assorted Housemade Gelato ($8)

Chocolate, Caramel, Basil, Orange cream, Vanilla

My thoughts: After such a disappointing entree, I thought it best to end on a sweet note–pun intended.  So the menu is a little deceiving. You get a choice of 3 of the assorted gelato listed. I chose chocolate, caramel, and basil. I ate the basil first, which was a nice transition to desserts from such a hearty meal. When I moved on to what I expected to be my favorite–caramel–I was shocked with another unfortunate disappointment at Bettola. This was not caramel at all, but rather coffee. A really abrasive, and slightly burnt, coffee. Reminded me of a chicory gone wrong. I couldn’t stomach eating the entire portion of it, and decided the chocolate may be worth the calories. The chocolate was rich, creamy, and decadent. After such a heavy winter-like entree, I couldn’t handle it. I should have just chose basil x3.

Overall, I don’t see what the hype about Bettola is all about in Birmingham, but will return again to try their pizza and give it another shot.
